Starter: Greet students, talk about the weather

Have students narrate homework pictures.

Model how to use pictures to create sentences:

1. Show students the minions. A single minion can be used for the pronouns “I” and “You.” The group of minions can be used for “We” or “ They”. These should come first in the sentence that is why they are on the first two rows of our papers.

2. Show students the places: school, city, shop, mountain, river, forest. These should come next in our sentences – that is why they are next.

3. In the bottom corner is one picture that has a variety of transportation vehicles – students may cut up the picture to use one mode of transport to end the sentence.

4. Show the large model, and say this sentence: “We go to the mountains by bus.”

5. Tell the children that they are invited to add describing words like hot/cold, wet/dry, big/small, tall/short, etc., as well as colour and number words to enrich their sentences. Therefore, a better sentence might be “We go to the cold mountains by red bus.” In addition, for students who are ready for a challenge, they might try saying “We go to the tall, cold mountains by slow, red bus.” (I know this is not quite correct, but it is close enough for this assessment.)

Distribute test forms and pictures. Have students cut pictures and glue them in order in each box. (Students can do more than six, if they wish.) Circulate and have them “read” their sentences to you. Marking successes as you go. Some students may remember other sentence frames, like “My brother has long arms”. They can apply those as well, to create sentences like “My brother has a red bus.” However, they need to do at least four sentences according to the original sentence frame.

For those students who finish early, they can colour the minion picture. Tell them to cut it out and have it ready for the next class.

Congratulate students on their efforts, and help them realize that they are in terrific shape to begin English in second grade! Tell them we will do one more like this next week.
