Warm up and Lesson objectives

  • Teacher greets learners and asks questions about the day, date and the weather:
  • What is the weather like today?
  • What season is it now? Is it hot or cold in winter?
  • Teacher elicits the topic of the lesson from learners and write the topic on the board “Weather”
  • Have learners write the date and topic of the lesson.
  • Draw learners’ attention to the lesson objectives and make sure they all understand them.

Pre-learning activities:

  • Teacher divides the class into 2-3 groups, hands in a sheet of blank paper and asks them draw a mind map with the weather words they know from their prior learning. Ask groups present their findings before the class and compare their knowledge of words. Whole class discussion.

Listening and writing practice

  • Ask learners make two columns in copybooks and write two headings “Country” and “Weather”. For listening practice. Learners see a video and elicit information according to the given task. They listen and see the video for 2 times. Learners swap copybooks and peer check each other. Video is played 3rd time for learners to check.

Differentiation: for less able learners provide a sheet of paper with countries, they are to write only weather words from the video. More able ones may write sentences from the video. EX: It is snowy. It is snowy in Canada.

New vocabulary

  • Introduce some other words related to weather forecast.
  • Drill pronunciation.
  • Give learners Vocabulary worksheet to glue into their vocabularies.

Health and safety check

The activity allows for a range of learners to succeed. There are tasks which require critical thinking skill, reading skills, writing skills, and speaking skills so that a variety of learners can achieve the lesson objective and connect to the material.

By means of flexible grouping - students can support each other during the group task. The teacher can target pairs that need extra help for added support.

Stronger pairs can be given the extension activity and less support.

In mind map circulate the class, direct and monitor progress. At the end of presentation give feedback on their progress.

In listening and writing task learners peer assess each other’s progress by watching the video.

Lessons will be delivered in accordance with health and safety standards.
